Rio silver medalist shuttler PV Singh has overtaken Saina Nehwal to become the new India No.1. While Sindhu jumped two spots to be 9th, Nehwal slid down five positions to 11th.

The latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking, released on Thursday, is not surprising as Nehwal was forced to quit the Olympics due to knee surgery. After a three-month break, the former World No. 1 returned to the China Open Superseries Premier last week but she crashed out in the first round.

This is Saina's (26) lowest ranking in seven years. She had not been outside the top 10 since 2009.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist had reached the pinnacle of world rankings in April last year.

Sindhu, on the other hand, had scripted history by winning first silver medal in the Rio games. She had one of the biggest victories of her career last week when she defeated China’s Sun Yu Hyun to lift Superseries title.
