PM Modi inaugurates Purvanchal Expressway

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on opposition parties and said the previous governments in Uttar Pradesh led by them reduced the state's vital eastern part to "mafiawaad" and poverty, but the BJP government is now writing a new chapter of development. The PM was addressing a rally in Sultanpur after inaugurating the 341-km long Purvanchal Express. He said that development under previous CMs was limited to places where they had homes and families, but the present regime is giving fruits of developments to the eastern region as good as to the western part of Uttar Pradesh. The previous governments reduced the vital eastern part of the state to "mafiawaad" and poverty, but the BJP government is now writing a new chapter of development, he said. He said the six-lane expressway will serve as the lifeline of the eastern region and give a big push to economic development of the region and the state. The state goes to assembly polls early next year. The 341-km expressway links state capital Lucknow with Ghazipur and has been constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 22,500 crore. PM Modi landed on the Purvanchal Expressway airstrip in a military transport aircraft. Previous UP govt didn't cooperate: PM Modi

PM Modi said: I used to be surprised by the situation 7-8 yrs back. I used to be surprised that what are some people punishing UP for? So, in 2014 when you gave me the opportunity to serve this great nation, I started going into the minute details of its development - as its MP, as the PM. I initiated a lot of projects for UP. Poor were given pucca houses, ensured toilets in their houses so that women don't need to step out to relieve themselves, that every house should have electricity - a lot of such things were necessary to be taken up here. But I'm pained that the then UP govt didn't cooperate. They were also scared of upsetting their vote banks by standing beside me in public. I used to come as an MP, they used to disappear after receiving me at airport. They were ashamed as they had nothing to show as work.
