The charges, outlined in the First Information Report (FIR) filed at the Navrangpura police station, included various sections of the Indian Penal Code related to unlawful assembly, rioting, obscene acts in a public place, causing hurt to deter a public servant from duty, and wrongful restraint.
Gujarat Assembly Election 2022: Jignesh Mevani, who won the last assembly election as an Independent candidate from Vadgam, was contesting on Congress ticket.
Jignesh Mevani news: However, Appellate Sessions Court has stayed the sentence till October 17 to enable them to file appeals and granted bail to the accused. The court granted bail to all 19 persons.
"After bringing me to Assam and following my bail from the Kokrajhar court, the Assam Police again cowardly arrested me by making a lady police officer a scapegoat," said Mevani.
The Dalit leader was arrested in this case on Monday soon after he was released on bail in another case in Kokrajhar district.
Mevani was remanded to 5 days of police custody in connection with an assault case. After the hearing of plea, the court had reserved the order on Apr 28.
Mevani was apprehended from Palanpur town in Gujarat on Wednesday night after an FIR under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act was filed in Kokrajhar Police Station.
Hearing in his case, including his bail petition, will be taken up on Monday, he added. Additional superintendent of police of Kokrajhar Surjit Singh Panesar told reporters here that the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) decided to remand him to one day of judicial custody.
Mevani was apprehended from Palanpur town in Gujarat on Wednesday night after an FIR under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act was filed in Kokrajhar Police Station. He was flown to Guwahati from Gujarat on Thursday morning and then taken to Korajhar by road.
Jignesh Mevani was arrested under Section 153A of IPC which deals with offences related to promoting enmity between communities.
Gujarat Congress president Jagdish Thakor and other Congress leaders rushed to Ahmedabad Airport after learning about Mevani's arrest and shouted slogans against the BJP government.
Mevani, who is currently a legislator in Gujarat and represents the Vadgam constituency, is the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM). He is a lawyer-activist and a former journalist.
The resignation of youth leaders from Congress had caused some disquiet in the party and sections of the party feel that the induction of Kumar and Mevani will help send a positive message to the party rank and file.
Mevani had won election from the Vadgam Assembly constituency in Banaskantha district in 2017 with the backing of Congress.
