Instagram, the popular image sharing app is said to be testing Instagram Direct messaging for the web that will allow users to chat with others without having to open the app. Once rolled out this feature will be available on desktop, mobile web browser, Android and iOS.
If this happens, it could possibly pave ways for Facebook to unify the backend infrastructure for Messanger, Instagram direct and WhatsApp. As if now, the Instagram Direct feature is not yet available for users and is still being tested to identify bugs and changes necessary.
The web version of Instagram Direct will help in becoming a more usable and full-fledged SMS alternative as messages are a more important initiative for engagement that helps draw people to the app that could also help Facebook monetize via more ads.
As if now, Instagram web experience still lags as one cant post Stories via desktop and in its current design state, Direct on the web is available from Direct arrow icon that is situated on the top right side of the screen.
In case Instagram Direct happens to get popular, Facebook could possibly pull it out from Instagram and give it a Direct destination website for users to access it.
We will have to wait and watch till this feature officially launches on the desktop.
