The London tabloid The Sun on Friday  frontpaged a story  saying that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim was linked to matchfixing by Pakistani cricketers.

The newspaper said, billionaire crime boss  Dawood Ibrahim had ties with al-Qaeda.

Fugitive Dawood Ibrahim, 54, is said to head a rigging network that connects Britain to the Middle East, India and Pakistan, says the report.

On Thursday night an informed source claimed that Ibrahim was one of the only crooks in Asia capable of fixing international games.

The source said: "This man is at the centre of a network which spans continents. He has the muscle and the money."

It came as Pakistan's disgraced cricketers Salman Butt, 25, Mohammad Amir, 18, and Mohammad Asif, 27, smiled as they left the team's hotel in Taunton, Somerset, to face a probe into a betting scam - insisting their careers were NOT over.  They will be grilled at Pakistan's High Commission in London on Friday. Scotland Yard is examining the mobile phone records of the players.

The al-Qaeda twist emerged following revelations about an approach to five Australian cricket stars in London during last year's Ashes series.

It was allegedly made by one of Ibrahim's key henchman, named by cops in India as Sayyed Rais.

Dawood Ibrahim, who is originally from Mumbai, India, is thought to be hiding out in Pakistan, from where he runs a "huge betting racket", The Sun report said.

The source said: "He has the clout to see these scams through because people don't want to mess with him."

Dawood Ibrahim has been identified by the UN Security Council as an associate of Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network - and was designated a global terrorist by the US.

He has been linked to drug shipments to Britain and Europe, extortion and prostitution.

Dawood Ibrahim - on the run for more than 20 years - was charged with bombings in Mumbai that killed 257 people in 1993. He is said to be involved in the terror attack on a hotel in the city two years ago.

The approach to the Aussie cricketers was made last summer in London ahead of the second Ashes Test at Lord's.  Fast bowlers Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson were approached when they were with all-rounder Shane Watson and bowler Stuart Clarke. Wicket-keeper Brad Haddin reported he had been approached earlier.
