6 Indian batters to be dismissed on 99 in ODI cricket

For any batter, it is a huge achievement to score a century. However, when a batter gets out on 99, it is a huge miss and heartbreaking not only for the player but also the fans. In the history of ODI cricket, 6 Indian batters have faced this fate. Here's a look at the list:

Kris Srikkanth was the first-ever Indian batter to be dismissed on 99 in ODI cricket. He scored those many runs of 111 deliveries with four fours and three sixes at a strike-rate of 89.18 against England in December 1984 in Cuttack. Having opened the innings, Srikkanth looked set to reach his century, but Mike Gatting caught him plumb in front of the stumps.

18 years later, VVS Laxman became only the second Indian batter to miss an ODI century by just one run. He was dismissed on 99 at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur against the West Indies in November 2002. Laxman was dismissed by none other than Chris Gayle who was a part-time bowler and the latter, opened the innings later and scored a century himself as India lost the match eventually.

18 years later, VVS Laxman became only the second Indian batter to miss an ODI century by just one run. He was dismissed on 99 at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur against the West Indies in November 2002. Laxman was dismissed by none other than Chris Gayle who was a part-time bowler and the latter, opened the innings later and scored a century himself as India lost the match eventually.
Rahul Dravid also faced this fate of being dismissed on 99 in March 2004 against Pakistan. He scored 99 runs off 104 deliveries with eight fours to his name in Karachi at the National Stadium. Dravid was castled by Shoaib Akhtar on 99 to break several Indian hearts but India eventually won the thrilling match by five runs, defending the total of 349 runs.
