Industrialization, commercialization, employment, recreation etc are a part of city life that lure people to settle in metros. However, there are two sides of the same coin. While millions are settling in big cities, the busy metro has become a concrete jungle.High rise buildings, slums, shrunk spaces, pollution; unhygienic conditions etc are also a common scenario in the big cities.Here is a compilation of the failed commercial cities of the world: 1. Harare, Zimbabwe The commercial capital of Zimbabwe, Harare's condition is getting worse day by day. It has been ranked as one of the worst cities of the world. Power and water outages occur daily in the city. Threat of civil unrest and the availability of public health care and public transport in Harare are intolerable. Energy and water supplies were undesirable, it said, calling phones and Internet services uncomfortable. The political and economic conditions of the city are worse.2. Lagos, Nigeria The main city of Africa, it is one of the worst cities to live in. Boko Haram, the Islamic militant organization is the main reason for its worst city tag. Kidnapping, stealing on gunpoint, sectarian violence etc are common in the city. The culture is slowly seeping away from the city and finding recluse in the rural areas, the infrastructure is raw and unmentioned accounting for severe sanitary conditions in many areas including the sectors where the business is supposed to be flourishing.3. Douala, Cameroon Due to political unrest, the city has been a victim of internal violence, with many buildings burnt.Cameroon due to the oil resources it possess is one of the relatively well-off countries in the African continent but the bad weather conditions are a threat to a business which isn't as flourishing as it should be.4. Algiers, Algeria Algeria has been subject to a number of political upheavals and has a history of local terrorist groups which have been active since the 2000s. The economic impact of this is multi-fold. Not only the infrastructural damage but the burn down of hospitals, unavailability of goods and recreational activities has halted investment, though foreigners are still living in and around Algiers due to its historical richness.5. Dhaka, Bangladesh The bad public health conditions, housing problems and overpopulation have failed the city.With people still flooding in, looking for work which Dhaka can no longer provide given its exponential increase in the population, Dhaka has become almost in-habitable in the recent years.6. Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby Port Moresby has been a site of major gang wars and street crimes.With presence of an organized gang, the unemployment rates are soaring to as high as 60%. The education system is in pieces with the gangs recruiting young children with increases the dropout rate. The city is beautiful and had a flourishing tourism sector but with the crimes on rise, few tourist centers and places of attraction are still in proper condition.7. Karachi, Pakistan Karachi is Pakistan's major commercial center, but with the situations of civil unrest building up along with majorly bad policy making on part of the Pakistani government, the living and business conditions in Karachi are getting worse by the day. Law-enforcement has received a major set back with increase in the number of people being murdered during various protests and terrorist attacks.8. Tripoli, Libya Tripoli has been a major commercial center in Middle East, this was until the beginning of the civil crisis in the Gaddafi regime, during and after which Tripoli has fizzled out many lists such as this one. With the black market emerging in full during the civil unrest and the Libyan dinar to dollar ratio shooting up, the commercial activities in Tripoli came to a stand still which has given way to a lot of crime and medical problems in and around the city.9. Detroit, USA Detroit, contrary to popular belief isn't being pushed to bankruptcy only because of the bad policy making that the leaders have exhibited, but rather cause since the many corruption scandals the general mood and the feel of a city has been of a destitute. Failing local factories and outsourcing of work has led to a standstill economically. When the city declared Bankruptcy, the emergency manager appointed by Michigan said the only thing people can blame Detroit's unfortunate fate to the poor planning.10. Abidjan, Ivory Coast Abidjan is has the third largest population of French speakers. It was the former capital of Ivory Coast and continues to be an important commercial center. Many areas in Abidjan are popular hubs from tourists from around the world but since the 1999s the general economic crisis in the Ivory Coast has led to a situation of social unrest. Negligence on the part of officials and widespread corruption too has become a source of trouble. In 2006 there was mass poisoning of people in Abidjan due to a polluting industry dumping wastes in landfills creating inevitable drama.
