New Delhi: The Kashmir issue has been a festering sore since the partition of India in 1947. Soon after independence, Pakistani tribals invaded Jammu and Kashmir, then a princely state under Maharaja Hari Singh, in 1948. The maharaja fled to India after signing the Instrument of Accession. Pakistani army invaded large parts of original Jammu and Kashmir, and gave away some of the territories to China.After the invasion by Pakistan, India took the matter to the United Nations, and the UN appointed a UN Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).A Line of Control divides Jammu and Kashmir and Pak Occupied Kashmir, with parts of the boundary in Jammu known as international border.India and Pakistan have fought three wars, in 1948, in 1965 and in 1971, and also a conflict in Kargil in 1999.With so many wars into effect, people living in the region are the main sufferers. We take a sneak peek into their lives along the border: 1. The Line of Control is the de facto border, separating India and Pakistan along the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the most dangerous international boundaries of the world. 2. The 740 km long demarcation has been a victim of constant tensions among the two neighbouring countries. 3. Three wars have been fought in the past, two of them over Kashmir. The first war was fought in 1947-48, second in 1965 and third in 1971 until the Simla agreement of 1972 bonded the two nations.The original ceasefire violation line was formed as the Line of Control. 4. But this did not stop here; again clashes began in 1999, on the Siachen Glacier. India lost almost 527 soldiers and 1,363 were wounded in the Kargil War.India and Pakistan came close to war again in 2002. 5. The Line of Control's purpose is to exclude smuggling of arms, and infiltration by Pakistani militants. 6. The line is actually a fence of concertina wire eight to twelve feet (2.4–3.7 m) in height, and is electrified and connected to a network of motion sensors, thermal imaging devices, lighting systems and alarms. These serve as alert signals for the Indian troops for infiltration inside the border. 7. Many ceasefire violations by the Pakistan forces have taken place in 2013. Pakistan has violated the ceasefire 96 times in 2013 so far, the highest in last eight years according to report of Ministry of Defense. 8. Many families live on both sides of Kashmir's Line of Control risking their lives. 9. Cross border shelling and intermittent firing by military forces have destroyed the lives of inhabitants. 10. The ongoing conflicts have ruined the economy and deprived people of education and proper living standards.
