Jammu, Aug 6: A Kashmiri Pandit died when some assailants allegedly beat him after he tried to save his son from being abducted by them in Jagti town here, triggering protests by locals in the area on Monday.
Two persons were arrested in this connection even as over 1,000 people from Jagti township blocked Jammu-Srinagar highway in protest against the incident which occurred Sunday night, police said.
Five assailants tried to abduct Ankur Talashi allegedly after a scuffle over some issue, they said.
On seeing this, Tej Krishen Talashi, aged around 50, came to his son's aid and the attackers stabbed and hit him with an iron rod, they said.
The assailants fled from the spot as locals rushed toward them, they said.
Tej later succumbed in a hospital, triggering protests in the area as people demanded immediate arrest of culprits, they said.
The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem at GMC hospital, they said.
"Police have constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the case after registration of murder and abduction case against the assailants," SSP, Jammu, Atul Goel said.
Search in on for the remaining three accused, he said.
The protests by over 1,000 Kashmiri Pandits, including women and children, continued late this afternoon as protesters were demanding Rs 25 lakh compensation to the kin of the deceased Tej Krishen Talashi, who was stabbed to death last night.
The protesters held demonstrations in support of the demand for compensation and security of the township.
Senior officials, including SSP Jammu, Atul Goel and deputy commissioner A K Sahu held deliberations with the protesters as the government was considering compensation besides job to the next of the kin.
Later, the protesters were persuaded and dharna on the highway was lifted and traffic was restored.
The Deputy Commissioner agreed in principle to provide Rs 1 lakh ex-gratia to the family besides job as a SPO for one member. However, the protesters remained adamant and demanded recruitment of the deceased's son as Follower or Constable in J&K Police.
