Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday alleged that eggs were hurled at her by a mob that gathered outside a restaurant she was at in her Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
Moitra shared videos on her Facebook and X accounts, showing the purported egg attack while hitting out at the BJP for the act.
The Krishnanagar MP alleged that the attack was carried out by the BJP with the state police "watching on".
The video recorded by Moitra from inside the eatery shows eggs hitting the restaurant's windows as the Krishnanagar MP films the incident on her mobile phone while seated with local TMC leaders and party workers.
As the eggs continue to strike the glass panes, Moitra is heard alleging that BJP workers were behind the attack.
The videos have since gone viral on social media, with the TMC accusing BJP supporters of carrying out the incident. The BJP had not issued an immediate response to the allegations.
Egg attacks on TMC leaders
The incident comes in the wake of similar attacks on TMC leaders following the party's loss to the BJP in the May West Bengal assembly elections, which saw the BJP toppling Mamata Banerjee's government in the state.
On June 7, residents hurled eggs at a police vehicle carrying TMC leader Sujoy Hazra in Midnapore, alleging that he had collected money from beneficiaries under a housing scheme without delivering the promised homes.
The same day, eggs were also thrown at Kolkata councillors Bappaditya Dasgupta and Md Jasimuddin as they were being escorted by police in connection with criminal cases against them. TMC minister Udayan Guha was similarly targeted on June 18, while party leader Vijay Singh was pelted with eggs outside an Asansol court on June 19 by protesters shouting "chor, chor".
Another similar major incident took place on May 30, when TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee came under attack during a visit to Sonarpur in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, where he had gone to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence.
Protesters allegedly hurled eggs, stones, shoes and slippers at Banerjee's convoy. Videos from the scene showed him wearing a protective helmet after being struck by eggs, while security personnel escorted him away. His shirt was reportedly torn and his spectacles damaged during the scuffle.
