The daily review and revision of prices is based on the average price of benchmark fuel in the international market in the preceding 15-days, and foreign exchange rates.
Chidambaram also asked if prices had not changed as all chiefs of oil marketing companies were in quarantine until Aug 15 or all those reasons were responsible for it.
Petrol prices in the Mumbai rose to Rs 107.83 per litre on July 19, The price of diesel in the city was Rs 97.45 per litre.

As for Bhopal, petrol price stood at Rs 109.89 per litre and diesel cost Rs 98.67 per litre. Kolkata reported Rs 101.74 per litre for petrol and Rs 93.02 per litre for diesel.
Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) announced a hike in prices of CNG and PNG with effect from July 8. CNG retail price in Delhi revised from Rs 43.40/kg to Rs 44.30/kg while PNG domestic price to be Rs 29.66 per SCM. On the other hand, Petrol is sold in Delhi at Rs 100.56 per litre and diesel at Rs 89.62 per litre.
Diesel prices have also become dearer in the national capital by 0.09 paise to retail at Rs 89.62 per litre.
Petrol price in Delhi crossed Rs 100-mark on Wednesday after a fresh hike of Rs 35 paise. A litre of petrol in the national capital is being sold at Rs 100.21. The cost of diesel is Rs 89.53 a litre after oil companies hiked the price by 17 paise.
Expressing concern over the rising fuel prices, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to lower the taxes charged by the Centre on petrol and diesel "to check the overall inflation" in the country.
While petrol was priced at Rs 99.86 per litre in Delhi after 35 paise hike, people in the national capital have to shell out Rs 89.36 (unchanged today) for one litre of diesel.
The price of petrol and diesel in Mumbai are Rs 103.89 and Rs 95.79 per litre respectively today.
The hike on Tuesday was the 28th increase in prices since May 4, when state-owned oil firms ended an 18-day hiatus in rate revision they observed during assembly elections in states like West Bengal.
