London: German driver Nico Hulkenberg will return to Sahara Force India for the 2014 Formula 1 season after signing a multi-year deal with the Silverstone squad.

Hulkenberg, who impressed many driving for Sauber in 2013, was at Force India in 2011 (reserve) and 2012.

"I am happy to come back to Force India," Hulkenberg said in a Force India statement Tuesday.

"The team is aiming high for next year and I believe that the experience I have gained over the years will help us achieve those goals. I genuinely believe we can have a competitive package in 2014.

"I've heard a lot of positive things about the Mercedes engine as well, so I think there is a lot to be excited about for next year," he said referring to the new regulations next season where the 1.6-litre turbocharged engines will replace the V8s.

The team said Hulkenberg's teammate will be named in due course. The 26-year-old was expected to join Lotus until it was announced that Pastor Maldonado will team up with Roman Grosjean for the Enstone outfit.

Force India team principal Vijay Mallya was delighted at the German's return.

"When he drove for us in 2012, it became clear Nico was an exceptional talent and he has continued to impress everyone in the paddock with his strong performances this season," said Mallya.

"Having Nico in our line up is a real statement of intent and a huge boost for everyone associated with the team. We have high hopes and expectations for 2014 and by signing Nico, we have put ourselves in the best position to achieve those objectives."

Hulkenberg led 30 laps in the season ending 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix before a collision with Lewis Hamilton pushed him down to fifth place. His best finish is fourth, achieved in Belgium (2012) and Korea (2013).
