New York: Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain might be stoutly defending the players implicated in the 'spot-fixing' scandal but the country's ambassador to the United Nations Abdullah Haroon feels if found guilty, the "rash and brash" youngsters should be punished.

The three players -- Test skipper Salman Butt and pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir -- were suspended by the ICC and questioned by the Scotland Yard yesterday about their alleged involvement in a 'spot-fixing' scandal brought to fore by a British tabloid's sting operation last week.

The trio has been defended by Pakistan's High Commissioner to Britain Wajib Shamsul Hasan, who has claimed that the scandal is a conspiracy to isolate the country.

But Haroon said the matter should be throughly probed and guilty should be punished.

"I think there should be an immediate due process of law and whoever is found guilty of misconduct in this should be appropriately punished," Haroon told a TV channel.

"We can't have have national icons or the standing of the nation jeopardised by rash and brash youngsters wanting to make money," he added.

Asif and Aamir are suspected of bowling deliberate no balls after taking money from alleged bookie Mazhar Majeed, while Butt is also under the scanner for taking bribes from the same man. PTI
