Murali Vijay:

With batsman like Gautam Gambhir sitting in the bench, it was necessary for the he Tamil Nadu opener to perform. He was having a hot and cold type of form before his England tour .He started his tour with a  century at Trent Bridge. Vijay ensured  that India survived the first hour on a green surface before making an extremely crucial 95 in the second innings.   He batted for 378 minutes that allowed MS Dhoni's men to recover from a middle order collapse: a period that saw 3 Indian wickets fall for 5 runs. Vijay got the with a wicket of Moeen Ali in England's first innings off a full length delivery.

The 8th wicket stand – a run-a-ball 99 with Bhuvneshwar –  lifted India and instilled in them the belief to push for a victory.  In England's chase, making full use of the footmarks, he struck the first blow, trapping Sam Robson lbw.
