Kolkata, Mar 11: The city police will keep a helicopter ready to deal with any emergency during the world cup matches to be held at the Eden Gardens on March 15, 18 and 20.


The step followed the alert issued by Union Home Ministry that terrorists may strike during cricket's mega event.

"All necessary arrangements are being made to provide full security during the matches. A helicopter would be kept ready as stand-by to deal with any emergency," Kolkata Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty told mediapersons at the Dr B C Roy Club House inside Eden Gardens this evening.

"There cannot be any compromise with respect to security. Apart from usual measures we are taking special steps for full protection to players and others at the airport, players' hotel, the stadium besides along the airport-hotel-Eden Gardens route," Chakraborty said.

The Police Commissioner, along with other senior officers, inspected the stadium and discussed the security arrangements with the Cricket Association of Bengal officials.

Chakrabiorty said advanced security measures, both technically and manually would be introduced at the stadium and the places where the players would be staying.

Beside usual police force, Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel would be deployed in and around the venue, players hotel, he said.

While only players' bus and cars of protected VIPs would be allowed to go to the gate of club house, other VIPs and dignitaries would have to get down from their cars some distance away from the club house gates.

The spectators have also been advised to come at their respective entry gates of the stadium well in advance as they would have to undergo thorough security check up. PTI
