Cairo: Sporadic clashes have erupted in several cities across Egypt as supporters of the country's toppled Islamist president continue to hold protests.

In the coastal city of Alexandria, hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood protesters marched after Friday prayers from a main mosque to a major thoroughfare where they confronted a protest against ousted President Mohammed Morsi. Authorities say the two sides hurled stones at each other as gunshots could be heard. They say security forces broke up the melee by firing tear gas and arresting a number of protesters.

In the industrial city of Mahallah, officials say anti-riot police fired tear gas to disperse another Islamist demonstration near a police station.

A popularly backed July 3 military coup overthrew Morsi. Protests and unrest followed across the country.
