Jammu, Jan 16: Pakistani troops yet again violated the ceasefire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday evening, Indian Army officials said, adding the fire was returned.

"Pakistani troops again opened small and medium fire at three Indian forward post on LoC in Mendhar sector today (Tuesday) evening," an army source said.

The Indian Army gave a calibrated response to the firing, "which was aimed mainly to silence Pakistani guns," the source said.

This is fourth incident of ceasefire violation since the brigadier-level flag meeting Monday to bring down tension on the LoC, which had mounted after Pakistani soldiers intruded into Indian side Jan 8 and brutally killed two soldiers. There have been continuous ceasefire violations by Pakistan since then.

Over a dozen ceasefire violations by Pakistan have taken place this year, while in 2012 the number was 117 against 61 in 2011. The firing by Pakistan across the LoC is mainly to cover to the infiltrating militants, the Indian Army says.

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on the LoC in November 2003. Guns were silent from 2003 to 2006, except for some scattered incidents.
