Moradabad, Jul 7: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Congress MP Mohammed Azharuddin  were on Thursday detained by Uttar Pradesh police while they were on their way to a violence-hit village in Moradabad where restrictions are in force.

While Yadav was detained near Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border by Ghaziabad police, Azharuddin, the Moradabad MP, was picked up by police in Moradabad when he was proceeding towards Asatalpur village where an irate mob indulged in arson and brick-batting, injuring a Deputy Inspector General on Wednesday.

The mob was protesting alleged police misbehaviour with women in the village.

Police said Yadav was arrested as he was going to the village with his supporters. They said he was picked up as Sec 144 (joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon) is in force there.

Yadav said he was being "illegally" detained by the police while on his way to Moradabad and accused the Mayawati government of "suppressing the voice" of politicians.

Azharuddin, who represents Moradabad Lok Sabha constituency, was arrested by the district police for violating prohibitory orders clamped under Section 144 of the CrPC, while Mulayam Singh Yadav was arrested at the UP Gate in Ghaziabad to prevent him from entering Moradabad. He was on his way to Moradabad from Delhi.

Both the leaders were going to take stock of the situation a day after a UP Police DIG was injured after an irate mob, protesting alleged police misbehaviour with women, indulged in arson and brick-batting in Asatalpur village.

DIG (Moradabad) Ashok Kumar had received head injuries and a police jeep was set afire in the violence after a police team raided the village in connection with a case.

The villagers alleged that the police had misbehaved with women and showed disrespect to a holy book.

According to reports, a girl of Mainather area had lodged a complaint against two persons for molesting her. It was following this complaint that a police team from Mainather police team raided the houses of the two accused. However, the two accused were not present in the house.

The villagers and the family members of the accused alleged that the police ransacked their houses and even misbehaved with the women of the family of the two accused.

The villagers then decided to protest against the police action and resorted to road blockade.

The cops rushed to the spot to pacify the villagers but all in vain. Since the villagers had blocked Sambhal Road, the cops tried to free the road. The cops then decided to cane-charge the villagers. DIG Moradabad Ashok Kumar Singh was also present when the cops resorted to lathicharge.

The deputy DIG Moradabad along with other police officers received injuries on Tuesday after an irate mob of villagers went berserk and resorted to road bloackade in protest against the alleged misbehaviour by cops with women members of the molestation-accused families on Monday.

To control the crowd, the cops cane-charged the villagers, used tear-gas shells and even opened fire in air to disperse the crowd which had blocked the Sambhal Road in  Mainather police station. However, the road blockade was lifted and over two dozen villagers were arrested.

Enraged with the police action, the villagers first put a police jeep on fire and then resorted to stone-pelting. The police then resorted to cane-charging but failed to quell the protesters.

The cops also used tear-gas shells and even opened fire in the air to disperse the crowd. In the ensuing melee, one of the stones hit the DIG on his head. Several other cops also received injuries. The DIG was immediately taken to Sai Hospital  in Moradabad.

IG Moradabad MK Bashal also rushed to the spot. The police have arrested over two dozen villagers for resorting to violence and arsoning and blocking the road. The police said that the situation was tense but under control.
