New Delhi, Nov 16 :  Waking up to the threat posed by unauthorised constructions after the tragedy in Laxmi Nagar, the MCD has asked the occupants of as many as 38 "dangerous" buildings in the East Delhi area to evacuate immediately.

"During a survey, basements of at least 38 buildings were found to be water-filled. We have issued them notice to vacate their houses immediately for their safety," Municipal Corporation of Delhi spokesperson Deep Mathur told PTI.

The preventive action has come in the wake of Monday night building collapse that claimed 67 lives and left 73 injured in the area. The basement of the four-storey building was waterlogged for the last two months due to the heavy rains, according to the government authorities.

Over 60 families were living in the cramped quarters of the 15-year-old building, where an illegal fifth floor was under construction.

The survey is being undertaken within a radius of 300 metres from Pushta Road where the building collapsed where water.

Yamuna river had flooded the area during the monsoon and Mathur said that more buildings will be vacated in case they are found unfit for inhabitation. PTI
