New Delhi: Mohammad Sirajuddin, a marketing manager at Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in Jaipur was arrested on charges of “working for the Islamic State”, by the Rajasthan ATS for publicising its ideology online via social media, and “instigating youth to join IS”.

On Thursday, he was arrested under provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1967 and was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate on Friday and has been remanded in police custody till December 21.

The 30-year-old man, broke down in front of the judges inside the courtroom, saying he was waylaid and has made a mistake.

He has purportedly urged the judge to show leniency as he has just become a father.

According to the ATS, he was using Internet groups and forums to instigate Muslim youth to join the IS. The ATS said it had “solid information” on Sirajuddin's activities which were “confirmed” following an interrogation and data analysis of his online activity.

“You could say he was recruiting people for the IS. He had created several groups on WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook and other social media platforms to publicise IS ideology,” Alok Tripathi, the Indian Express quoted Additional DGP (ATS).

“He was in touch with some youths from Maharashtra and a girl from Hyderabad. We tracked him after we got information about suspicious activities on his computer's IP address,” the daily quoted sources as saying.

Police seized Sirajuddin's laptop and several issues of Dabiq, the IS propaganda journal, from his Jawahar Enclave residence in Jawahar Nagar, Jaipur

Sirajuddin's father, a retired agriculture department official, stays in Gulbarga with his mother and a younger brother, who is also an engineer.

The ATS probably will jointly interrogate Sirajuddin along with officials of central agencies.
