While traveling in the train we should be aware of the various acts or laws that are made and we should see that while traveling we are not violating them as any of the below mentioned act may land us in jail.Let us have a look on the mistakes that we need to avoid while traveling in a train of Indian Railways. Ticket less travel: This is the most common activity that most of the Indians while traveling in a train commits. There are various provisions under which a passenger if caught traveling in a train without the valid ticket may have to pay a fine of 1000 rupees or even may be sent to jail for six months imprisonment.The Tickets of passengers can be checked by the concerned authorities(a) when they are entering the platform(b) en-route to the extent possible by travelling ticket examining staff; and(c) at destination, where the tickets should also be collected. If a railway passenger is traveling in a class that is not mentioned in the ticket or the passenger is traveling in a higher class of compartment then also he is entitled to get punishment under law.If the concerned railway ticket checking authority catches such passenger then the passenger should pay the difference of fare between the two categories of coaches. If the railway passenger is unable to do so then there is a provision that the passenger may even land up in jail and have to stay there for a period of one month.Passengers generally traveling short distances on train do such kind of activities but they should always remember that if they get caught by concerned authority or railway people it will land them in trouble. As a passenger traveling on Indian Railways we should always remember that unauthorized buying and selling of reserved tickets is an offence under Section 143 of the Railways Act.The penalty for unauthorized purchase and sale of tickets will be a fine of Rs.10,000/- or imprisonment up to three year. Passengers who buy tickets from unauthorized travel agents may lose both their tickets and the reserved accommodation, if such tickets are impound during checking by the concerned authorities.Traveling under another person's name is an offence under Section 142 of the Railways Act which pertains to travel on transferred tickets. Passengers who purchase transferred tickets are likely to be detrained, fined and even prosecuted. The penalty for transfer of tickets will be a fine of Rs.500/- or imprisonment up to 3 months or both.While traveling in Indian Railways train one should be careful that taking alcoholic products is a punishable offence under new railways rules.Taking note of what a nuisance drunk men on-board can be for others, particularly the women passengers, railways have issued orders to the train-manning staff and ticket checking staff to take strict and immediate action against passengers serving or consuming alcoholic drinks on board the train.There is a bad news for smoker as well . Indian Railways have banned smoking in trains and railway premises; the punishment for smoking on railway premises is a fine of Rs. 200 which is compoundable. Carrying inflammable items in train journey is strictly prohibited. It is a punishable offence under Section 164 of the Railway Act, 1989, where the offender may get an imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of Rs. 1,000 or both and under Section 165, where a fine of Rs. 500 is applicable.While traveling in Indian Railways each passenger is allowed a free allowance up to which he can carry luggage with him in the compartment, free of cost. The free allowance varies for different classes of travel. Children aged 5 and below 12 years are allowed half of the free allowance subject to the maximum of 50 Kgs. You are also permitted a marginal allowance. There is a maximum ceiling on the luggage which can be carried inside the compartment for each class.AC First Class 70 Kgs AC 2-Tier sleeper/First class 50 Kgs AC 3-tier sleeper/AC chair car 40 Kgs Sleeper class 40 Kgs Second class 35 KgsIf passenger is found to carry more than the stipulated amount of luggage the passenger will have to pay a six times more the fare of the luggage which the passenger is carrying along with him.
