New Delhi: In what could be an alarming safety lapse, the doors of a moving metro train remained opened as it travelled from Arjangarh to Ghitorni station on HUDA City Centre-Jehangirpuri corridor today.

Around 9.40 am, the left side doors of a train moving from Arjangarh to Ghitorni metro station, en route Jehangirpuri on Line two, were open between the two stations, which is an elevated section.

According to a spokesperson of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), prima facie it appeared to be an “error” by the train operator and he has been suspended with immediate effect.

However, there were no reports of injury to any passenger or damage and the metro trains on the route were operating according to schedule.

The spokesperson said further investigation into the matter is underway.

Meanwhile, some passengers posted pictures of the open doors of the train on micro-blogging website Twitter.  “Delhi metro doors left open on running train. Door shutting switch should work as lock for train moving switch.  Foolproof mechanism needed,(sic)” tweeted Harish Jharia.

Another blogger Kiran Sethi tweeted, “Delhi Metro doors open while on the move... had this happened in a developed country civil suits would have been filed.. poor Indians” (sic).

Over 26 lakh commuters use the Delhi Metro service and second highest footfall was recorded on Jehangirpuri to HUDA City Centre metro line with 9,33,431 passengers last year.
