Muzaffarnagar (UP): The judicial custody of ten accused in connection with a riot case here has been extended till October 16 by a court here.

The Special Investigation team (SIT) probing the Muzaffarnagar riots had approached the court for extension of their custody which was supposed to end yesterday, officials said.

Chief Judicial Magistrate Narender Kumar extended the custody of Yogesh, Jonu, Mohit, Mona, Satyendra, Ankur, Vijender, Deepak, Rahul and Niraj.

The ten accused were in jail on charges of loot and setting a house ablaze in Haroli village during the riots here last year.

According to the FIR lodged by one Hasan's brother, he was burnt alive in his house allegedly by the accused during the communal clashes here on September 8 last year.  However, the murder charges could not be levelled against the ten accused because the victim's charred body was not recovered.

During investigation, SIT had collected ash from Hasan's burnt house and sent the sample for DNA test following which it was found that he was burnt alive when the accused set his house on fire.

Over 60 persons were killed and more than 40,000 displaced in communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas last September.
