New Delhi, Jul 7: Congress today left the Government to fend for itself over the resignation of high-profile Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran in the wake of the CBI naming him in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

“If at all anything has to be said about the sequence of events...it is for the government to do so,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters in reply to a volley of questions including whether the Congress leadership had no hand in making Maran a Minister.

Tewari ignored questions over the BJP demands for the resignation of Home Minister P Chidambaram over his alleged involvement in the 2G scam. “I am a member of the JPC going into the 2G scam, it is not proper for me to respond to such queries,” he said.

He said that the resignation of Maran, the second DMK casualty in the scam, will have no impact on the alliance between the Congress and the Dravidian party. “Political alliances are based upon the appreciation of the ground situation. DMK has been the alliance partner of the UPA both at the Centre and in the state and the situation stays as such”, he said when asked whether the development showed that DMK is a liability for Congress and needs to be dumped.

He sidestepped a question whether the resignation has had an adverse impact on the image of the Congress-led coaltion.

On BJP's charge that the resignation was the case of “too little, too late”, Tewari said it does not behove the opposition to say such things in view of “mounting and clinching evidence” against the party's Chief minister in Karnataka B S Yeddyurappaa. PTI
