Kolkata: In a gross distortion of India's freedom struggle to attain independence, a history textbook for Class VIII in West Bengal branded the freedom fighters as ‘extremists'.

The chapter ‘Krantikari Aatankvaad' includes the names of dauntless freedom fighters Khudiram Bose, Prafulla Chaki and Jatindranath Mukherjee.

Though the two-page chapter refrained from calling them ‘terrorist' directly, it said that the activities in which they were involved was of ‘extremists'.

Meanwhile, a controversy has erupted in the state with opposition parties members describing the move by Mamata Banerjee government as ‘shameless' and ‘insult' of freedom fighters who struggled for India's independence.

This is not the first instance where a textbook has described our freedom fighters ‘terrorist'.

In past, a Social Studies book for Class X in Odisha had termed a group of freedom fighters ‘extremists' who took to revolutionary activities to attain their goal.
