Mumbai: In a shocking incident of medical malpractice at a government hospital, 33 female patients suffering from fever and cold, were given wrong antibiotic injections following which there health further worsened.
Soon after the incident, the Bhabha Hospital management shifted all patients to a nearby hospital for emergency medical assistance.
As per the reports, all 33 patients, admitted to the women ward at the fourth floor, were given sefxim or sanacef injection.
“This is first time such incident has taken place. All patients were given same injection. Within five minutes of the injection, my health deteriorated further,” a patient said.
Irate over negligence on the part of the hospital, relatives of patients raised slogans demanding immediate action against the hospital management and doctors.
Meanwhile, Dr Pradeep Angre, Medical Superintendent of the hospital said that a high-level inquiry will be ordered to fix the accountability.
“This should not have taken place. This is a serious issue. These two injections are very common in fever and cold; hence all patients were given these specific drugs. At that time, our priority was to stabilize them. A high-level inquiry will be ordered to look into the carelessness on the part of management,” he said.
“All were women... as a precautionary measure, we shifted them to a nearby hospital because at Bhabha Hospital, ICU facility is not available,” he replied when asked about the reason behind shifting patients to another hospital.
Local MLA Milind Kamble also visited the hospital to take first hand stock of the incident.
“There were 33 patients on the fourth floor of this hospital. They were given wrong injection, we are looking into it,” he said.
The incident has also raised questions on authenticity of medicines being supplied by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to such hospitals in the city.
