A jawan of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed while five others were injured as militants targeted a paramilitary convoy near Pantha Chowk in Srinagar today.

Two civilians, including a 10-year-old girl, were also wounded in the attack, PTI reported.

Militants opened fire on a civilian passenger vehicle carrying CRPF jawans at Sempora in the Pantha Chowk area in the afternoon, a police official said.

He said six CRPF personnel were injured in the attack by the militants, who managed to flee taking advantage of the ensuing chaos.

One of the injured personnel, Head Constable Basappa, later succumbed to his injuries, the official said.

Two other security personnel were said to be critical. The civilian driver of the vehicle and a 10-year-old girl also sustained injuries in the attack, he added.

The CRPF jawans were on their way to Srinagar for duty in connection with the upcoming Lok Sabha bypolls.

The attack is the latest in the series of fresh assaults by militants on security forces.

"Our companies were going from Jammu to Srinagar and were fired upon by terrorists. Six personnel have been injured and taken to the hospital," B Chaudhary, CRPF PRO, said.

"It's a sensitive time, separatists have called for boycott of elections. We are on high alert," he said.

Yesterday, a constable of the Jammu and Kashmir Police was killed in a grenade attack by militants in Nowhatta area of the city here.

15 other security personnel were injured in the attack on a police party next to Ganjbaksh Park in Nowhatta area at around 7.00 pm.

On Saturday, two soldiers were injured in a militant attack on an army convoy near a hospital on Parimpora-Panthachowk bypass road.

The latest attack comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state where he asked the Kashmiri youth to choose between tourism and terrorism.
