Centre can hold a referendum on 'Triple Talaq', says Zafaryab Jilani

All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) member Zafaryab Jilani today said that 90 per cent Muslim women support the ‘Sharia Law’ and that the central government can hold a referendum on the issue of ‘Triple Talaq’.

"Ninety per cent Muslim women support the Sharia Law. Union government can hold a vote on the issue of triple talaq. Muslims will not tolerate any interference in the Muslim Personal Law,” Zafaryab Jilani said.

He also alleged that the move to ban ‘Triple Talaq’ is an attempt to impose “Uniform Civil Code’ in the country.

The AIMPLB member, however, clarified that divorce is considered an unpleasant act in Islam and that it is, in fact, discouraged.

On October 7, the Central government had opposed in the Supreme Court the practice of ‘triple talaq’, 'nikah halala' and ‘polygamy’ among Muslims and favoured a relook on grounds like gender equality and secularism.

Responding to a question on the escalating tension between India and Pakistan, Jilani said that every Muslim is standing with the country to teach a lesson to the neighbouring nation.

He also added that Pakistan was affected by its own conspiracies and that even Pakistani mosques are not safe from terrorist attacks.
