Saharanpur:A 16-year-old boy was run over by a train today, apparently while he was taking a selfie, at Chunhati railway gate on Delhi Road here.

Kartik Kakkar, a student of class X in Rainbow School here, went cycling with his three friends this morning when the mishap occurred, police said.

The Haridwar-Ajmer Express ran over the boy and dragged him almost 500 metres due to which his both legs and an arm were severed and he died on the spot, they said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, police said.

Raising an alarm over the issue, a recent report on such deaths around the world and published in the Washington Post, said that out of at least 27 “selfie-related” deaths around the world last year, about half occurred in India.

Experts say that selfies have become an attention-seeking activity for youths trying to find self-esteem and self-worth in the ‘likes’ and comments on various social media platforms.
