The government on September 1 has constituted a committee headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind to explore the possibility of "one nation, one election." Assembly polls are due in five states in November-December and they will be followed by the Lok Sabha elections in May-June next year. However, the recent moves by the government have thrown open the possibility of advancing the general elections and some state polls, which are scheduled after and with the Lok Sabha contest.

Announcement coincides with I.N.D.I.A meet

According to reports, announcement by the Modi govt have coincided with the third meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) alliance which was held in Mumbai to divert public attention from Opposition's meet. As many as 63 representatives from 28 political parties are taking part in the meeting. The alliance has been formed to take on the NDA in 2024 elections.

No negative effect on 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Ever since the Centre's surprise announcement of holding a special session of Parliament from September 18-22 was made, politics pundits and experts have been busy digging into the details of what could have probably prompted the government for such a move. While the buzz is that the government is likely to push the 'One Nation, One Election' in Parliament during the special session, ministers and leaders from the ruling alliance have remained tight lipped.  According to few experts, upcoming assembly polls in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and others could well be the reason behind government's sudden move. The government may also go for an early Lok Sabha elections if assembly results are not in BJP's favour. A gamble, the saffron party would want to win.
