Bihar is set for a major political shake-up as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to tender his resignation on Tuesday (April 14) at around 3 pm, as per sources. Kumar, who was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP a week ago, is expected to visit Raj Bhavan to tender his resignation immediately after his last cabinet meeting on Tuesday. BJP leaders in Bihar have said the name of the party's first Chief Minister in the state will be known on Tuesday, with Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan likely to arrive in Patna to facilitate the power transition.
"Tomorrow, the BJP legislature party meeting will be held at the party office at 2 pm. This will be followed by a meeting of the NDA legislators, at the central hall of the assembly, at 4 pm," state BJP president Sanjay Saraogi told the media.
BJP gears up for leadership transition
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already set the stage for a leadership change in the state. Senior party leaders have indicated that the name of Bihar's next Chief Minister will be finalised on Tuesday itself. Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is also likely to reach Patna to oversee the transition process.
State BJP president Sanjay Saraogi outlined the day's schedule, saying, "Tomorrow, the BJP legislature party meeting will be held at the party office at 2 pm. This will be followed by a meeting of the NDA legislators at the central hall of the Assembly at 4 pm."
Speculation mounts over successor
Political circles are abuzz with speculation that Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary could take over the top post. The son of veteran leader Shakuni Choudhary, he joined the BJP in 2017 after a long stint in the Rashtriya Janata Dal.
Although party leaders have maintained silence on the matter, recent developments have intensified the buzz. Choudhary, who represents the Tarapur constituency, has been at the centre of political activity, with senior leaders frequently visiting his residence.
High-level visits add to political buzz
On Monday, several prominent leaders, including Sanjay Saraogi and JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha, were seen visiting Choudhary’s residence at 5, Desh Ratna Marg, located near the Chief Minister’s official residence. Nitish Kumar, the longest-serving Chief Minister of Bihar, had surprised many last month by announcing his decision to enter the Rajya Sabha. The move came soon after he led the NDA to a decisive victory in the November assembly elections. As he turns 75, this potential resignation could mark yet another significant chapter in his long political career.
