From politics and ideology to humour, courage and tragedy, India TV takes you through 10 Olympics moments that shook the world.Jesse Owens - Berlin 1936With Adolf Hitler readying himself for war, the Olympics was held in Berlin and the Nazi leader attempted to use the event as a tool to promote his twisted ideology.African American Jesse Owens rained on his parade in the best possible way - winning four gold medals, including the marquee event, the 100 metres.Having seen their Ayran superiority theories blown out of the water, Nazi officials claimed that because black people have 'abnormally large animal heel bones' the US team had cheated by selecting Owens.It was reported that Hitler refused to shake Owens' hand afterwards.Derek Redmond - Barcelona 1992 Great Britain's Derek Redmond, whose career had been blighted by injury prior to the Barcelona Olympics, looked to be on the verge of redemption as he progressed to the semi final of the 400 metres.However, his injury curse struck again and he tore his hamstring midway through the race, collapsing to the track in agony.As the stretcher-bearers approached, Redmond struggled to his feet, still in enormous pain and with tears streaming down his face, and began to hobble round the track.His father then pushed his way past officials to help his son round the remainder of the track and across the finish line as the capacity Barcelona crowd rose to their feet in appreciation of what has since become a symbol of the true Olympian spirit.Nadia Comaneci - Montreal 1976The world looked on with wonder and amazement as 14-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci scored perfect '10s' on the uneven bars, the balance beam and the all-round competition at the 1976 Games.So unexpected was the feat that some of the scoreboards in the arena were not equipped to display the number 10 and instead appeared to mark her as '1.00'.Mary Decker / Zola Budd - Los Angeles 1984Zola Budd was already a controversial figure before the 1984 Games - a white South African who had chosen, and had been accepted, to compete for Great Britain at a time when South Africa was banned from international competition due to its apartheid regime.Her choice to run barefoot was also a point of contention but her notoriety rocketed when, during the final of the 3000m, she cut across American favourite Mary Decker, colliding with her and sending her crashing to the ground.As Decker lay injured, Budd went on to finish the race senventh. Debate has raged ever since as to whether or not Budd's overtake move was illegal.Paula Radcliffe - Athens 2004Great Britain's Radcliffe, one of the strong favourites for gold in the marathon, quite literally performed meltdown after her attempts to catch runaway leader Mizuki Noguchi of Japan failed.On the hottest day of the month and with four miles to go, Radcliffe dropped out, slumping on the kerb.Many tearful interviews followed while debate raged over whether it was the conditions or an inability to cope with the intense pressure that had prompted Radcliffe's collapse.Cassius Clay - Rome 1960Fighting under what he later labelled his 'slave name', the world got its first glimpse of the man who was to be known as Mohamed Ali as he took gold in the light heavyweight division.He apparently refused to take the medal off for two days after his victory but later tossed it into the Ohio River after being refused service at a whites only restaurant.Tommie Smith and John Carlos - Mexico 1968At a time of heightened racial tensions in America, Smith and Carlos, rather than face the United States flag, bowed their heads and raised gloved fists in protest at racism in their home country during the medal ceremony for the 200 metres.The incident caused outrage with both athletes being banned from the Olympic village.However, as with many protests of this kind, passage of time showed it to be a milestone in America's civil rights movement and both men received honours in 1998, on the 30th anniversary of their protest.Eric 'The Eel' Moussambani - Sydney 2000Eric, from Equatorial Guinea, clocked the slowest time for the 100m freestyle in Olympic history as he laboured home in just shy of two minutes in a heat that included no other swimmers due to disqualifications.Later nicknamed 'The Eel', at times he looked to be struggling for air but was eventually roared home by the capactiy crowd.A loser in some people's eyes but, bearing in mind he had only learned to swim the previous January, a hero for others.Ben Johnson - Seoul 1988Rated by many as the most scandalous incident in Olympic history, Canada's Johnson left onlookers gasping for breath as he destroyed a world-class 100 metres field that included Olympic legends Carl Lewis and Linford Christie, smashing the world record in the process.Two days later he tested positive for steroids, exposing arguably the highest profile case of cheating in sport the world has ever seen.Terrorist atrocity - Munich 1972The darkest chapter in the history of the Olympic Games was played out in September 1972 when a group of Palestinian terrorists broke into the Isreali dormitories in the Olympic village, murdering two athletes and taking a further nine hostage.Later, during a bungled rescue operation, all nine hostages, five of the eight terrorists and a policeman were killed.
