Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had in the run up to the previous assembly poll in Gujarat had described as "maut ka saudagar" (merchant of death) in the wake of 2002 post-Godhra communal riots.

Amid reports in a section of media that Modi would not be fighting assembly elections from Maninagar constituency this time, Aiyer said "why is he not fighting from Maninagar constituency this time"?
 
In Palanpur, Congress MP from Maharashtra, Hussain Dalvi said Modi was a rat  compared to Sardar Patel. Dalwai said there was no comparison between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Modi.


 
“While Sardar Patel united the nation, Modi is simply trying to divide people on communal lines,” Dalwai said. Mocking Modi for his alleged attempt to project himself as “chhote Sardar”, Dalwai said, “But you are like a rat compared to Sardar.”
 
Dalwai also accused Modi of financing the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
