Coronavirus Updates: May 23, 2020 | As it happened

2,608 new COVID-19 positive cases, 60 deaths and 821 discharged in Maharashtra today. The total number of positive cases in the state now stands at 47190, including 1577 deaths and 13404 discharged. 

A total of 248 COVID-19 positive cases and 7 deaths reported in Rajasthan today. The total number of positive cases in the state stands at 6742, including 160 deaths, 3786 recovered cases, and 2796 active cases.

127 new COVID-19 confirmed cases reported in West Bengal today, 60 discharged and 4 died today. The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 3459, including 1341 discharged and 201 deaths. 

A special flight Air India Express (IX 442) with 177 passengers from Muscat landed at Cochin International Airport, Kerala today.

52 COVID-19 positive cases and 25 cured/discharged in Telangana today. The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 1813, including 1068 cured/discharged and 49 deaths.

54 more COVID-19 cases reported in Jammu and Kashmir - 2 from the Jammu division and 52 from the Kashmir division. The total number of positive cases in the Union Territory (UT) is now at 1569, including 774 active cases, 774 recovered, and 21 deaths.

In the last 24 hours, 396 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Gujarat. The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 13,669 including 6169 cured/discharged and 829 deaths.

201 new COVID-19 positive cases reported in Madhya Pradesh today, 9 died and 178 recovered today. The total number of positive cases in the state rises to 6371, including 281 deaths and 3267 recovered.

1566 new COVID19 cases and 40 deaths reported today, taking the total number of positive cases in Mumbai to 28,634.

COVID19 cases climb to 350 in Jharkhand, with 17 new cases being recorded in Koderma, Ranchi, and Simdega.

The number of active cases of COVID-19 rises to 275 in Kerala, with 62 more people testing positive today.

3 new COVID-19 cases reported from Jamshedpur. The total positive cases in Jharkhand are 333 now.

A total of 185 people in Himachal Pradesh have tested positive for COVID-19 till date, including 57 recovered cases and 3 deaths. There are 121 active cases in the state now.

710 new COVID19 cases and 5 deaths reported in Tamil Nadu today, the total number of positive cases in the state now stands at 15,512, of which 7,915 are active cases. The death toll now stands at 103.

Ministry of Railways on Saturday addressed the media amid lockdown 4.0. Here are the pointers from the presser: 

• Union territories were advised to check through publicity the possibilities of rumor-mongering regarding the shortage of food, essential commodities.
• More than 2600 special trains have run till date, more than 35 Lakh migrants have availed the benefits of these trains.
• Shramik Special Trains were started on 1st May. Free meals and drinking water being provided to all the passengers. Social distancing and hygiene protocols being followed in trains and stations.
• 80% of the train journeys have been undertaken by the migrant labourers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
• Ministry of Railways has contributed immensely in the effort to domestically produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and sanitisers and produced 1.2 lakh Coveralls and 1.4 lakh litres sanitiser.
• Cyclone was a natural calamity. West Bengal Chief Secy wrote to me that restoration work is underway & they'll tell us soon when they'll be able to receive the trains. As soon as they give us a clearance, we'll run the trains to West Bengal.
• Uninterrupted freight movement operations by the Ministry of Railways have ensured delivery of 9.7 million tonnes of food grain between 1st April and 22nd May; 3255 new Parcel Special Trains have been run since 22nd March.

196 new positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Karnataka from May 22, 5 pm to 5 pm today, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 1939, including 1297 active cases and 598 discharges.

For the first time since the pandemic began, China reported no new cases of COVID-19. Fears of a second wave means that many restrictions are still in place.

591 COVID-19 cases and no deaths reported in Delhi in the last 24 hours. Total number of cases in the national capital rises to 12910, including 6412 active cases

In the last 24 hours, 47 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Andhra Pradesh; taking the total number of cases to 2561. Death toll rises to 56 after one death was reported

World Health Organization emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan warned Friday about the surge in cases in Brazil and the wider region. The country has recorded over 330,000 cases, second only to the United States. 

80 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Odisha today; taking the total number of positive cases to 1269. Active cases stand at 826

Rajasthan reports 48 fresh positive cases of COVID-19 and 2 deaths till 9 am. Total number of positive cases rise to 6542 and 155 deaths, while active cases hike to 2695
