World's top ten weapon buyers,India is at no.1

New Delhi: Conventional weapons include small arms, light weapons, sea mines, land mines, non-nuclear bombs, shells, rockets, missiles and cluster munitions. These weapons use explosive material based on chemical energy.The conventional arms industry has grown many fields. The Stockhom International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released data about weapon buyers across the world. The volume of international transfers of major conventional weapons was 24 percent higher in the period compared to the 2002-06 period. The data show, the world's five largest importers of weapons over the last half decade are all in Asia, reflecting a variety of tensions playing out in the region.Here is a list of top ten importers of weapons in the world on the basis of SIPRI's data.India India has displaced China as the world's largest importer of conventional weapons.According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, India is the largest arms importer, accounting for 12% of world deliveries.China China has rapidly expanded its arms production capabilities in the last five years and is now the sixth largest supplier of arms with Pakistan being its primary customer.It was listed as the world's largest importer of arms between 2002-2006 according to the think-tank that tracks global weapons deals. But according to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, China is the 2nd largest arms importer, accounting for 6% of world deliveries.Pakistan “Pakistan has a long-term military relationship with China and during 2007-11 it received 64 per cent of the volume of Chinese exports. This included 50 JF-17 combat aircraft, 3 F-22P (Zulfiquar) frigates and 203 MBT-2000 tanks.According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Pakistan is the 3rd largest arms importer, accounting for 5% of world deliveries.South Korea South Korea, which is technically at war with its unpredictable and belligerent North Korean neighbor, ranks fourth in the list of largest arms importer.According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, South Korea is the 4th largest arms importer, accounting for 5% of world deliveries.Singapore Singapore's population is just 5.1 million and because of the tension in the South China Sea, the country is prioritizing its weapon defense system. According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Singapore is the 5th largest arms importer, according for 4% of world deliveries.Algeria Algeria's Ninety-three percent of arms imports come from Russia delivering weapons such as 44 Su-30MKA combat aircrafts, 2 Project-636 submarines, S-300PMU-2 long-range surface-to-air missile systems and 185-T90S tanks.According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Algeria is the 6th largest arms importer, accounting for 4% of world deliveries.Australia According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Australia is the 7th largest arms importer, accounting for 4% of world deliveries.USA US is the largest arm exporter in the world accounting 30% of world deliveries.In terms of weapon imports as per SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, USA is the 8th largest arms importer, accounting for 4% of world deliveries.United Arab Emirates According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database the United Arab Emirates is the 9th largest arms importer, accounting for 3% of world deliveries.Saudi Arabia Majority of its military weapons are imported from Europe and North America. Saudi Arabia purchased 48 Typhoon combat aircrafts from the UK and 152 F-15SA from the U.S. Its armored vehicles come from Canada, France and the U.S.A.According to the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database, Saudi Arabia is the 10th largest arms importer, accounting for 3% of world deliveries.
