New Delhi, Oct 11: Amid the controversy over cap on subsidised LPG cylinders, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today raised the issue at Cabinet meeting and sought clarity, prompting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ask Petroleum Minister Jaipal Reddy to address the questions raised.
Pawar, the chief of crucial UPA constituent NCP, raised the matter towards the end of the Cabinet meeting, sources said.
He wanted to know the cut-off dates for implementation of the September 14 decision to cap subsidised LPG cylinders at six per connection annually, they said.
Pawar's contention was that many families may have already used their quota of six subsidised cylinders when the decision to cap subsidy was announced, the sources said.
He also wanted to know how the decision would apply to housing societies which have a common connection, they said.
Pawar also sought to know the steps being planned by the government is to check cooking gas being sold illegally.
The Prime Minister is learnt to have asked the Petroleum Minister to address the issues raised by Pawar.
Pawar and DMK's T R Baalu had earlier voiced concern over providing six LPG cylinders per connection per year at subsidised rates at the meeting of the UPA Coordination Committee last month.
The decision to cap subsidised LPG cylinders at six has been criticised by many political parties and other sections but the government has justified it as important.
