Mark Carney meets PM Modi: India and Canada seal uranium deal, sign MoU on critical minerals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Canadian PM Mark Carney in New Delhi for delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House. The leaders discussed trade, energy, investment and strengthening the India-Canada strategic partnership.

In the nation's capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with his Canadian counterpart, Mark J. Carney, on Monday. The leaders will soon have delegation-level discussions after meeting at the Hyderabad House.

After meeting with Canadian PM Mark Carney, PM Narendra Modi says, "I am delighted to welcome Prime Minister Carney to India. This is his first visit to India as Prime Minister. We view this as an important milestone. He warmly welcomed me and my delegation at the G7 meeting in Canada last year. It is a privilege to welcome him with the same warmth today..."

PM Modi also says, "There are very few people in the world whose CVs include central banking leadership in two countries. Since our first meeting, our relationship has been energised, mutual trust and positivity have blossomed."

The Indian PM also says, "We are pleased that Canada has decided to join the International Solar Alliance and the Global Biofuel Alliance. To further our shared efforts, we will hold the India-Canada Renewable Energy and Storage Summit this year. In civil nuclear energy, we have reached a landmark deal for long-term uranium supply. We will also work together on small modular reactors and advanced reactors."

We are natural partners in technology and innovation. With the Canada and India innovation partnership, we will turn ideas into global solutions. I thank Prime Minister Carney for Canada's valuable contribution to the success of the AI ​​Impact Summit held in India last month. We will enhance cooperation in AI, as well as quantum, supercomputing, and semiconductors."

"The MoU signed today on critical minerals will strengthen resilience supply chains. In the space sector, we will connect startups and industries from both countries. In the energy sector, we are building a next-generation partnership, which will place special emphasis on hydrocarbons as well as renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy storage."

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, CAMECO President Tim Gitzel, and High Commissioner of India to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, exchange documents of the Department of Atomic Energy CAMECO deal on the supply of uranium ore concentrates, in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that an India–Canada Pulse Protein Centre of Excellence will be established in India, marking a significant step in strengthening agricultural and scientific cooperation between the two nations. He emphasised that the growing collaboration in defence and security reflects deep mutual trust and the maturity of the bilateral relationship between India and Canada. Highlighting future priorities, he said both countries will work to enhance defence industry cooperation, Maritime Domain Awareness, and military exchanges. To further deepen strategic ties, the two nations have also decided to establish the India–Canada Defence Dialogue, creating a structured framework for advancing defence and security partnership.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the strengthening ties between India and Canada, stating that engagement between the two governments over the past year has exceeded that of the previous two decades combined. He emphasised that this marks not just a renewal but an expansion of a valued partnership built on new ambition, focus, and foresight, with both nations confidently shaping their future. 

Praising the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Carney noted that India has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in the world, with per capita incomes rising at an unprecedented pace. He added that Canada shares India’s ambition and vision, reflecting the spirit of the G20 theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” which underscores the importance of global cooperation. He also announced the launch of a strategic energy partnership aimed at expanding bilateral energy trade and deepening collaboration in clean energy sectors such as wind, solar, and hydrogen. 

With Canada planning to double its power grid by 2050, Carney said India could play a major role in this expansion, adding that these agreements mark the beginning of a prosperous and sustainable partnership that will create generational opportunities for businesses and workers while protecting the planet.

As part of the Canadian Prime Minister's official visit to the nation, EAM S Jaishankar paid him a visit earlier on Monday and praised his dedication to forging a partnership that looks to the future.

The Canadian PM later met PM Modi at Hyderabad House. In a post on X, Jaishankar said he was "delighted" to call on Prime Minister Carney during his visit to the national capital.

"Delighted to call on Prime Minister Mark J Carney of Canada in New Delhi this morning. Appreciate his commitment towards charting a forward-looking partnership," the EAM's post read. 

The Canadian Prime Minister landed in the national capital on Sunday evening following the conclusion of a productive visit to Mumbai, marking the next phase of his official tour of India. Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry and for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, received the visiting leader at the airport.

On Sunday evening, Jaishankar also met his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand. At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Carney is on an official visit to India from 27 February to 2 March. This marks Prime Minister Carney's first official visit to the country, which began when he arrived in Mumbai on 27 February. 

The high-level discussions, scheduled for today at Hyderabad House, will see the two Prime Ministers hold delegation-level talks to review the progress achieved to date across diverse areas of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership. Building on their earlier meetings in Kananaskis in June 2025 and Johannesburg in November 2025, on the sidelines of the G7 and the G20 summits, respectively, the leaders will "take stock of ongoing cooperation in key pillars, including trade and investment; energy; critical minerals; agriculture; education, research, and innovation; and people-to-people ties.

According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs, they will also exchange views on regional and global developments. In addition to their formal talks, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Carney will attend the India-Canada CEOs Forum. 

This visit comes at an important juncture in the normalisation of India-Canada bilateral relations, with the anticipated discussions on Monday focusing on key strategic and economic issues of mutual interest between the two nations.
