Chennai: Tamil Nadu government yesterday declared November 15 a public holiday on account of Muharram instead of the previous day, as notified earlier.

The notification in the extraordinary gazette came after the Chief Kazi's letter to the state government, an official release said.

The Chief Kazi had stated that since the crescent (New Moon) has not yet been sighted in Tamil Nadu or any other parts of India for the New Islamic month of Muharram, the 10th day of Muharram 1435 Hijri (Islamic Calendar)will be observed on November 15 and requested to change the holiday.

The state government had earlier notified November 14 as a public holiday for Muharram under negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

"The government, after careful consideration of the matter has decided to change the public holiday from November 14 to November 15 on the occasion of Muharram under Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881," it added.
