As `3 Idiots' came under Maharashtra Medical Education Department scanner for allegedly inspiring a ragging incident, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday  sought to distance himself from the incident, recommending officials of the concerned department to watch the movie.

"Films have always depicted social evils and created awareness about them in the society. The concerned department can watch the film and check for itself. Censor board is there to take care of such issues," Chavan told reporters.

Medical Education Minister Vijaykumar Gavit had yesterday said his department would watch the film to see if it glorified ragging.

"We will ask the movie's producer to submit its script as there are media reports that the nature of Seth Medical College Ragging incident was similar to the one shown in `3Idiots'. We will also watch the film," he had said.

Gavit said the government would also write to the Censor Board that as far as possible such scenes should be avoided in films.

Chavan said though the errant students would be punished, their academic career would not be harmed.

"The students have been rusticated from the hostel and their scholarships and fellowships taken back, but I am of the view that while punishing them, their career should not be harmed," he said. More PTI
