Mumbai, Jan 22: More than eight godowns were gutted along with several lakhs of rupees worth goods late Monday night in a blaze that engulfed the slums of Maharashtra Nagar.

A woman and two children were sent to Sion Hospital, after they felt suffocation due to smoke.

The fire was noticed at around 2:15 am, when most of the people were asleep in their slums.

Fire officials said, empty oil containers and plastic goods were kept inside the godowns adding fuel to the blaze.  A large number of policemen were posted in the locality and power supply was switched off.

Nearly 12 fire engines and tankers were brought in to control the blaze.

DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, the slum dwellers were asked to take out  their inflammable goods like LPG cylinders and kerosene  in the open, to prevent the fire from spreading.
