Indian prisoner beaten to death inside Lahore jail over minor issue, family wants his body

Khan and other prisoners rushed to the spot, and by that time Chamel Singh was dead. He was taken to Jinnah Civil Hospital, where he was declared dead and his body was kept at the mortuary. 



Chamel Singh disappeared from his fields in Pargwal village of Akhnoor sector on the India-Pakistan border in July 2008.

He was imprisoned by Pakistani authorities on charge of espionage.  

Chamel Singh's wife Kamlesh Devi lodged a missing person report with the local police station but his whereabouts came to be known only after the family received a letter from him informing them how he had been picked up by Pakistani Rangers and convicted as an Indian spy but he would soon be finishing his jail term in Pakistan.  

Dara Singh, Chamel Singh's son, said, “I read his letter myself. He had written that he was serving a 5 year jail term but his term would soon end and he would come home.”  

Says Dara Singh:  “No one has come to meet us yet. But we will meet the District Collector. The entire family will go and appeal to him.”
