India builds world's highest rail bridge over river Chenab

New Delhi: Touted as the next man-made wonder, the world's highest rail bridge being built across Chenab riverbed in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir will take at least three more years to be functional.

The Chenab Bridge was originally scheduled to be completed in December 2009.

However, in September 2008 it was announced that the Chenab bridge had been cancelled due to fears over its stability and safety.

Railway officials say the bridge, which is five times higher than Delhi's Qutub Minar and far taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, will be completed by December 2016.

The arched structure will connect Baramulla to Jammu via Udhampur-Katra-Qazigund with a travel time of six-and-a-half hours.
