    J&K: 2 Hizbul terrorists killed in encounter at Anantnag

    Two Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Saturday, police said. "Killed terrorists identified as Ishfaq Ah Ganie R/O Chakwangund, Anantnag and Yawar Ayub Dar R/O Dogripora, Awantipora, affiliated with proscribed terror outfit HM.     NCB arrests 8, seizes 35 kg heroin in pan-India drug bust

    The Narcotics Control Bureau on Saturday claimed to have unearthed a "major" pan-India heroin trafficking network with the arrest of eight people and seizure of about 35 kg of narcotics. The operation began on May 24 after the federal anti-drug agency first intercepted two women passengers who landed in Bengaluru from Zimbabwe and about 7 kg of heroin was seized from them.

    Seven charge-sheeted for selling fake helicopter tickets to Vaishno Devi pilgrims

    Seven persons allegedly involved in selling fake helicopter tickets to Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims were charge-sheeted on Saturday in a court in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. While four of the accused were arrested from Rajasthan in March, three were held from Bihar in May during the investigation into complaints regarding duping of pilgrims who were sold online fake helicopter tickets for the journey from Katra to the hill shrine. As many as fake websites were also identified and blocked during the investigation of the cases, a police spokesman said.

    Bihar decides to accord permission for exploration of 'country's largest' gold reserve

    The Bihar government has decided to accord permission for exploration of the "country's largest" gold reserve in Jamui district, a senior official said on Saturday. As per a Geological Survey of India (GSI) survey, around 222.88 million tonnes of gold reserve, including 37.6 tonnes of mineral-rich ore, are present in Jamui district. "The state Mines and Geology Department is in consultation with agencies engaged in exploration, including GSI and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), for exploration of gold reserves in Jamui."

    Delhi: Man shot dead, brother injured for intervening in argument

    A man was killed and his brother injured after they were shot at when they tried to intervene in an argument between two persons in south Delhi's Ambedkar Nagar area, police said on Saturday. Police received information about the incident at 11:38 pm on Friday and rushed to the spot. At the spot, Rohit (27) and Gulshan (30), both residents of Madangir, were found injured and they were taken to the AIIMS trauma centre, they said, adding that two empty cartridges were found at the spot. Gulshan died during treatment. Rohit is undergoing treatment and not in a condition to record his statement, the police said.

    Delhi Transport Commissioner rides state bus; CM terms it 'rare sight'

    Delhi Transport Commissioner Ashish Kundra took a ride in a state bus on Saturday to take stock of issues being faced by commuters, a move which was lauded by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot.  The commissioner's bus ride comes days after the Delhi government on Wednesday directed all group A and B officers of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and the Transport Department to travel in a bus at least once a week and submit feedback on its condition and staff behaviour. Kundra took to Twitter and posted his selfie travelling in a government bus. Kejriwal lauded the effort and said it was "a rare sight". '

    Man ends life after killing his wife, two children with wood cutting machine in Chennai

    A 41-year-old man killed his wife and two young children allegedly with a portable electric wood cutter and then ended his life at his house in Pozhichalur at Pallavaram here, police said on Saturday. The gruesome deaths came to light when the neighbours, on suspicion, went up to the house and found the family of four lying in a pool of blood with their throats slit. Upon being informed, the Shankar Nagar police rushed to the spot and held preliminary enquiries. The horrid incident sent shock waves in the neighbourhood.

    Uttar Pradesh: 11 days after she went missing, girl's body found in well with limbs tied

    The body of a 16-year-old girl, who was reported missing 11 days ago, was found in a well here with her hands and legs tied, police said on Saturday. Superintendent of Police (SP) Anil Kumar, who visited the spot, told reporters on Saturday that some people in a village under Unjh police station were out for a walk on Friday night when they detected a foul smell emanating from the well that belongs to farmer Amar Pal Singh. A sack was pulled out of the well. Inside it was the girl's body with her hands and legs tied. It seems that the body was thrown in the well almost 10-12 days ago, the SP said.

    J&K: Militant associate arrested in Baramulla

    A militant associate was arrested with arms and ammunition in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Saturday. Security forces on Friday established a routine mobile vehicle checkpoint at the Authoora Bala bridge in north Kashmir's Baramulla. During the checking, the joint party intercepted a person whose movement raised suspicion, a police official said. He said the person tried to flee on noticing the naka party. However, he was tactfully apprehended by the alert joint party.

    Chhattisgarh: 2 minor sisters drown in village pond in Surguja

    Two minor sisters drowned in a pond at a village in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, police said on Saturday. The bodies of the girls, identified as Divya Tirki (8) and her sister Sushila (7), natives of Diwaliya village in Udaipur area, were found floating in the pond on Friday, said Manoj Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of Kadma police chowki. Surguja, a neighbouring district of Korba, is located around 300 km away from capital Raipur.

    Tribunal asks BEST to pay Rs 13 lakh compensation to kin of bus accident victim

    The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has ordered the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) to pay Rs 13.21 lakh compensation to the family of a 20-year man, who lost his life in 2017 in a road accident involving a bus operated by the undertaking. The BEST undertaking provides bus transport services in Mumbai and in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mira Bhayandar areas. In the order passed on May 19, MACT member M M Walimohammed ordered the BEST to make the payment to the claimants within two moths along with the interest at the rate of 7 per cent per annum from the date of filing of the claim, failing which it will have to pay interest at 8 per cent till the realisation of the award amount.

    Two dead as minibus falls into river Jammu

    Two people were killed when a minibus fell into the Tawi river after the driver lost control of the vehicle while crossing a bridge here, police said on Saturday. The accident occurred near Bikram Chowk late Friday night, they said. The bus driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle while crossing the Tawi bridge. The bus smashed the concrete fence of the bridge before landing on the river bed, resulting in the death of two occupants whose identities are being ascertained, the police said. In a separate incident, 27 passengers were injured after a speeding bus overturned on the Battal Ballain bridge in Udhampur district along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in the early hours of Saturday, according to the police.

    PM Modi pays tributes to Savarkar on his birth anniversary

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tributes to Hindutva ideologue V D Savarkar on his birth anniversary. Savarkar was born in 1883 in Maharashtra. "Respectful tributes to Veer Savarkar, the hardworking son of Maa Bharti, on his birth anniversary," Modi said in a tweet in Hindi. Modi also shared a photo montage on Savarkar with his own and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's voiceovers talking about the qualities and contributions of the Hindutva icon.

    Maharashtra: 70 new COVID cases in Thane district, no death

    Thane district of Maharashtra has reported 70 new coronavirus positive cases, which took its infection count to 7,09,795, an official said on Saturday. These cases were reported on Friday. As nobody succumbed to the infection during the day, the death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,895, he said, adding that the mortality rate is 1.67 per cent.

    Global Covid caseload tops 528.3 million

    The global coronavirus caseload has topped 528.3 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 6.28 million and vaccinations to over 11.38 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University. In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and the death toll stood at 528,311,949 and 6,286,120, respectively, while the total number of vaccine doses administered increased to 11,380,282,743. The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 83,969,313 and 1,004,692, respectively, according to the CSSE. India accounts for the second highest caseload at 43,147,530.

    Woman gets 15 months in prison for punching flight attendant

    A California woman who punched a Southwest Airlines flight attendant in the face during a flight, breaking her teeth, has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison. Vyvianna Quinonez was also ordered Tuesday by the federal judge in San Diego to pay nearly $26,000 in restitution and a $7,500 fine for the assault on a May 23, 2021, Southwest flight between Sacramento and San Diego.

    Argentina reports 2 cases of monkeypox

    Argentina reported two cases of the monkeypox virus on Friday in men who had recently arrived from Spain, marking the first time the presence of the virus has been confirmed in Latin America during this latest outbreak. Argentina's health ministry first confirmed a man from the province of Buenos Aires who had traveled to Spain has monkeypox. Later in the day, the ministry said in a statement that a suspected case involving a resident of Spain who had arrived in Argentina earlier in the week was also confirmed positive.

    The photograph of a banner placed outside a police station here forbidding BJP workers from entering it has gone viral on social media. The banner reads "BJP Karyakartaon Ka Thane Main Aana Mana Hai" (BJP workers are forbidden from entering the police station)." The name of the station house officer (SHO) of medical college police station is also written below the note.     Mathura case: Application filed for status quo on mosque premises

    Three applications were filed in the court of civil judge (senior division) here in the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Idgah dispute case, requesting among other things that the status quo be maintained on the mosque premises, officials said. The applications were submitted in the court of Jyoti Singh as part of a suit filed in the name of deity Sri Krishna Virajman and Lucknow-resident Manish Yadav, who claims to be a descendant of Lord Krishna, in 2020 for shifting the mosque. The petitioners have claimed that the mosque is constructed on a part of 13.37 acre land of Katra Keshav Dev temple.

    Man alleges duped of Rs 12 lakh by 'con bride'

    A man filed a police complaint on Friday alleging that he was duped of cash and valuables worth Rs 12 lakh by a woman who married him in 2020, but later turned out to be a "con bride". Police said they have filed an FIR at Adarsh Nagar police station based on a complaint by Ajay Kumar, who said he met the woman online through an app and lured him into the marriage.
