New Delhi, Sept 18: Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan on Sunday called on his old friend Amar Singh at the AIIMS hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for kidney infection.

Amar Singh has been given interim bail by court till Monday, when it will be reviewed.

Accompanied by his daughter Shweta, Amitabh Bachchan strode into the hospital to meet his long-time friend. Amar Singh, sources said, greeted Bachchan and had lunch in his presence.

This was Big B's second meeting with Amar Singh after the two broke their friendship following the latter's expulsion from Samajwadi Party.

Amar Singh is facing charges in the Parliament cash-for-vote scam.

Bachchan and his daughter Shweta met Singh in the private ward around noon. “He was there for two hours,” a doctor with AIIMS said.

His visit comes two days after Singh's close associate and MP Jayaprada had sought to know where his friends from the film fraternity were, an oblique reference to Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan.

“Where are those big celebrities who used to be with Singh and were helped by him in their land-related cases?” she asked. Bachchan had bought a land in Barabanki district of UP earlier but had to face a court case on the issue.

Singh, 55, was admitted in the private ward of AIIMS on September 12 evening after his creatinine level rose and was immediately put under medical observation.

He was brought from Tihar jail where he was lodged since September 6. A Delhi court had sent him on 14-day judicial custody following his arrest in connection with the 2008 cash-for-votes scam. Singh is on interim bail till Sep 19. After investigations, doctors found that Escherichia coli, a type of bacteria, has been found to be the cause of the urinary tract infection suffered by Singh who had undergone a kidney transplant surgery in Singapore in July, 2009.

As such, the fluctuations in the creatinine level (a marker of kidney function) continue to exist.  “His creatinine level is still high but under control. We can say it is not in danger level. His condition is stable and we have all facilities available here for treatment of any problem of the kidney if it arises,” a doctor with AIIMS said.

Along with doctors from the department of nephrology, Singh is also under the observation of consultants from the department of gastroenterology, endocrinology and psychiatry as he also suffers from hypertension and diabetes. PTI
