Warning students to refrain from enrolling in fake institutions, the UGC has released a list of 21 bogus varsities of which eight are in Uttar Pradesh and six in Delhi.

In a notification issued on Wednesday, the UGC has listed 21 fake universities — eight in UP, six in Delhi and one each in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and West Bengal.

Here goes the list of India's fake universities:

Delhi:

1-Varanseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Delhi

2-Commercial University Ltd, Delhi

3-United Nations University, Delhi

4-Vocational University, Delhi

5-ADR- Central Juridical University, Delhi

6-Indian Institution of Science and Engineering, Delhi

Uttar Pradesh:

7- Mahila Gram Vidyapith/Vishwavidyalaya, (Women's University), Allahabad

8- Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith, Allahabad

9- National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy, Kanpur

10-Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University (Open University), Aligarh

11-Uttar Pradesh Vishwavidyalaya, Mathura

12-Maharana Pratap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya, Pratapgarh

13-Indraprastha Shiksha Parishad, Noida-Phase II

14-Gurukul Vishwavidyalaya, Vridanvan, Mathura

Bihar:

15-Maithili University, Darbhanga

Karnataka:

16- Badagnavi Sarkar World Open Educational Society, Belgaum

Kerala:

17-St. John's University, Kishanattam

Madhya Pradesh:

18-Kesarwani Vidyapith, Jabalpur

Maharashtra:

19- Raja Arabic University, Nagpur

Tamil Nadu:

20- D D B Sanskrit University, Putur

West Bengal:

21- Indian institute of Alternative Medicine, Kolkata

According to the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, only a university established by the Central/State/Provincial Act or an institution deemed to be university under Section 3 of the Act is allowed to call themselves as university.

Therefore, any institution that does not comply with the above rule is prohibited from using the term ‘university' under Section 23 of the Act.

 “Students and public at large are informed that such 21 self-styled and unrecognized institutions, functioning under the contravention of the UGC Act are declared as fake, and are not entitled to confer any degrees further,” the UGC said in its notice.
