10 upcoming metro destinations of Indian cities

New Delhi: Metro rail in India has become a boon for citizens. Commuting has been made easier for passengers, traffic jams reduced, though women safety issues have crept in. Metro rail first started in Kolkata in 1984. The second rapid transit system was introduced in Chennai which started in 2002. Delhi metro was India's first modern metro and third rapid transit system in India overall. The government plans to introduce metro projects in all cities which have population more than 2 million. Here is a list of 10 upcoming metro destinations of Indian cities:1. Kochi metroClassified as the Tier-II city, the first phase of Kochi metro would end by 7 June 2016. The estimated cost of the project would be Rs. 5181 crore. 2. Hyderabad metroThe project is being under construction under private public partnership, with an estimate cost of Rs. 17, 000 crore. The phase 1 of the project includes 3 lines.3. Bhopal metroThe total system consists of 3 corridors covering a distance of 38.5 km. This project will cost INR80 billion (US$1.2 billion) approximately. 4. Chandigarh metroThe operation would start by 2018. The number of lines proposed is two. Number of stations would be 30. The cost of the project would be around Rs. 113.75 billion. 5. Indore metroThe total system consists of 3 corridors covering a distance of 33.26 km. This project will cost INR85 billion (US$1.3 billion) approximately. The project will start by 2019. 6. Lucknow metroIt will be the most expensive public transport system in the state of U.P. The project would cost around Rs. 12500 crore. 7. Pune metroThe operation would start by 2018. Number of lines would be 4 and the plan length would be 82 km. 8. Mumbai western railway elevated corridorFirst proposed by then railway minister Laloo Prasad yadav in 2007, the corridor would link Oval Maidan with Virar. It is proposed to run around the same lines as the Mumbai suburban railway. It would be operational by 2020. The project would have 26 stations of which 5 would be underground, 19 elevated and 2 at ground.9. Patna metroThe planning commission gave approval for Mass Rapid Transit system for the City of Patna on September 14, 2011. The metro rail in Patna is the second metro rail transport system in the total East India after the Kolkata Metro in the city of Kolkata.The Metro rail is expected to run on three routes in 2016. For First Phase:- Route 1A, 1B, 2 i.e. Danapur to Mithapur Bypass Chowk, Digha-High Court Link and Patna Railway Station to Proposed ISBT.In the second phase, Metro Rail services would be provided between Bypass Chowk Mithapur to Deedarganj via Transport Nagar along NH 30 Bypass (13 km) Elevated along Bypass Road and in the third phase between Bypass Chowk Mithapur to Phulwari Shariff AIIMS via Anisabad along NH 30 Bypass (11 km) Elevated along Bypass Road. 10. Jaipur metroIt would be India's fourth metro rail system after Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore. On 4 July 2013 Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot after review meeting directed officials not to settle for any compromises on the quality of work and safety of people.With this, the metro poject in the pink city will not start running until early 2014.
