Nirbhaya's parents show victory sign after the Supreme Court's verdict on Dec 2012 gang rape case, in New Delhi on Monday.

The Supreme Court on Monday reaffirmed its verdict upholding the death sentence to four convicts who gang-raped and murdered Nirbhaya.

Dismissing the plea for the recall of the May 5, 2017 verdict upholding the death sentence, Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice R. Banumathi and Justice Ashok Bhushan said that the petition lacked grounds for a review.

Pronouncing the judgment, Justice Bhushan said the review petition must show an error resulting in miscarriage of justice. He said none of the petitions by the convicts pointed out to an error leading to miscarriage of justice.

A young professional, Nirbhaya, as she came to be known, was brutally sexually assaulted in a moving bus by five men -- one of whom committed suicide in prison -- on December 16, 2012.

The crime triggered nationwide outrage. Nirbhaya died in a Singapore hospital.

The court also said that the hearing on the appeals against the Delhi High Court judgment confirming the death sentence lasted 38 days as the lawyers for the four convicts were given full opportunity to state their case.

Here are some of the prominent reactions on the Supreme Court verdict

#  "We knew that review petition will be dismissed. But what next?  So much time has gone by and threat to women have gone up in this span. I believe sooner they're hanged, better it is". - Badrinath Singh, father of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim

# "Our struggle does not end here. Justice is getting delayed. It's affecting other daughters of the society. I request judiciary to tighten their judicial system, serve justice to Nirbhaya by hanging them as soon as possible and help other girls and women". - Asha Devi, mother of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim

#  "They were not juveniles. It is unfortunate that they committed such crime. This decision reaffirms our trust in the court that we will definitely get justice".- Asha Devi, mother of 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim

# "The entire country welcomes the Supreme Court judgement. It will prove as a lesson for people who commit such crimes". - PP Chaudhary, Minister of State (MoS) for Law and Justice

#  "Justice should be served to everyone. Injustice has been done to the children (convicts). This decision has come due to political, public and media pressure"- AP Singh, Counsel of the three accused of 2012 Delhi gang rape case who had filed a review petition in Supreme Court

# "It is a victorious moment. Faith in the judiciary has been reinstated. We are satisfied today. The only request to the Central govt is to expedite whatever process is to follow now"- Rohan Mahajan, lawyer of the family of 2012 Delhi gang rape victim

# "I welcome this decision as it proves justice can be delayed but not denied. It's a landmark decision. This judgement shows that law takes its own course in this country".- Rekha Sharma, Chairman of NCW on SC's decision to dismiss review pleas in 2012 Delhi gang-rape case

# "SC's judgment has raised and restored people's faith in judiciary. We as society need to send a very strong message to the culprits and accused in cases of rape"- Meenakshi Lekhi, BJP MP

# "Unfortunately executions do not eradicate violence against women. There is no evidence to show that death penalty acts as a deterrent for sexual violence or any other crime. Instead, the government must allocate adequate resources for the effective implementation of laws, improve conviction rates and ensure certainty of justice in all cases".- Amnesty
