Holding the issue of the Ram Mandir as ‘sensitive’ and ‘sentimental’, the Supreme Court today said that fresh attempts must be made by all parties concerned to find a solution to the decades-old case. The court advised the parties involved in the matter to sit down and arrive at a consensus outside court.

Stressing upon settling the matter amicably, the SC bench of CJI JS Khehar said that ‘if the parties want him to mediate, then he is ready for the task’.

“It is a sensitive and sentimental issue and it's best that it is settled amicably,” the bench also comprising Justices DY Chandrachud and SK Kaul said.

“All parties concerned to sit together to arrive at a consensus,” the court added.

The SC’s observation came while hearing the petition filed by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy who had sought urgent hearing of Ayodhya dispute.

The court even asked the petitioner to consult the parties and inform it about the decision on March 31.

Swamy, who was present inside the courtroom, argued that it was difficult to make both communities sit together and that only judicial intervention could settle the dispute.

To this, the court said that all parties should choose mediators to make a fresh attempt to settle the issue.

"If required, a principal mediator can be chosen by the court for settling the issue," the court said.

Swamy had in his petition urged the top court to take up the matter which has been pending for six years before it.
