Agra: A month ago, the Agra police were as baffled and clueless a lot as Nirmal Singh, a software engineer by profession, must have been when he was allegedly killed by none other than his wife three days into their marriage.

Over a month after the murder on May 23, the police have tasted success – the woman charged with the murder has been arrested and has been sent to judicial custody. The woman allegedly murdered Nirmal and fled with valuables worth lakhs.

While the time consumed in the period of investigation may point to an open and shut case, the process of hunting down the woman, Tara (alias Rubina alias Sonu Chauhan) was no easy task for the police personnel. A week after the murder, police personnel spread across Udham Singh Nagar, Rudrapur and Haldwani.

Armed with the woman’s photograph clicked during her marriage to Nirmal and a ration card – that carried Tara’s name – the police went around these cities showing her photograph to around 1,000 people.

While going around, the police got a clue from a man who informed them about her identity, something they had not known so far.

The man the police had chanced upon was a match-maker -- a marriage broker – and he identified the woman as Rubina and not Tara as the police believed so far. The man further said that the police would be able to find her in Kashipur.

Upon reaching there, the police then got in touch with a young man, an informer for the local police. The search began and the girl was located. The information was correct, but nabbing her would not be easy as the police feared swooping in on her would trigger protests. The police then came up with a masterstroke.

Knowing the woman’s penchant for materialism, the young man aiding the police called up Rubina and told her, “Get ready, there is work at hand.” When Rubina stepped out of her house, she found a man dressed as a groom with some men around him.

Little did she know that the man was none other than the SHO himself, and the men around him were the constables.

The SHO himself had dressed up like a groom and the constables were all posing as members of a marriage procession.

The next part of the plan was to entice the girl. And it was done in style. The SHO told Rubina that the he wished to get married to her. However, that wedding would have to be in Dehradun and requested her to travel along with them.

Sensing an opportunity, Rubina agreed to along with them. What happened next was something she would never have thought of in her wildest dreams.

She landed up in the police station instead of Dehradun, where she was promptly arrested. She was produced before the court on June 1 and sent to judicial custody.

A resident of Avas Vikas colony, Nirmal Singh, after a divorce from his first wife.

Tara alias Rubina allegedly drugged her husband with an overdose of sleeping tablets in milk and allegedly strangled Nirmal Singh to death and fled with all the jewellery and cash.
