Delhi power demand: A brutal cold wave swept Delhi on Thursday with the minimum temperature dropping to three degrees Celsius- the lowest in January in two years- making it cooler than several hill stations.
Power plants are operating at full throttle to meet the demand, and the govt has ordered coal import to meet the shortfall in domestic supplies.
The coal being sourced on behalf of the state generating companies (gencos) and independent power plants is based on the indents received from them.
As per Discom wise peak power demand last night, this is only the fourth year in Delhi's history, when the national capital's peak power demand has breached the 7000 MW.
The national capital has been witnessing an intense heatwave, with the maximum temperature recorded at 40.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday, two notches above the season's average.
The demand for power has risen in April due to heatwave and people in different parts of the country are facing power cuts.
This increase in demand amounts to over 28 per cent from April 1, 2022, when the city clocked 4,469 MW power demand.
The peak winter power demand in BRPL and BYPL areas had reached 2,091 MW and 1,107 MW respectively during last winter.
The peak power demand clocked 5,985 MW at 11.12 pm on Wednesday, pipping the season's previous high of 5,899 MW recorded on June 16, the officials said, adding that the peak demand was 5,925 MW at 3.34 pm on Thursday.
Delhi's peak power demand clocked 5,805 MW on Monday night, the season's highest, surpassing the previous high of 5,591 MW recorded on June 12, power discom BSES said on Tuesday.
Last year, the peak electricity demand in Delhi was recorded at 7,016 MW -- the highest till now.
The sizzling heat on Monday pushed the peak power demand in the national capital to 6,612 MW, the highest so far this summer, as the maximum temperature settled at 40.6 degrees Celsius, leading to a surge in the use of air conditioners and coolers.
This was higher than the annual peak load of 2017 -- 6,526 MW on June 6, 2017.
The highest peak demand registered in the discom's area last year was 1,967 MW, said TPDDL, which supplies electricity to north and northwest parts of Delhi.
It had crossed the 6,000 MW mark only twice last year. 6,021 MW on May 16 and 6,001 on May 26.
